Is there a convertor or something else I need so i can have surround sound while I watch tv and not just while I watch movies. I have a panasonic surround sound system and Hitachi big screen.

just run audio cables from the audio out on the back of the tv into an audio in on the back of the surround sound receiver…than select the input on the receiver for whatever one tv is on

There should be a Dolby pro logic mode that will plex the receiver to surround sound. If your Receiver can do this than you are good to go. If you have a Digital receiver for your television, than you can hook up the digital audio to your receiver and then get Dolby 5.1 on broadcasts that use it.

Yes, but remember it’s not so much your equipmen but moreso what is being broadcast. Not everything on regular TV is 5:1 so only channels broadcasting it will be available.
of course you can set your receiver to broadcast sound through all speakers if you want, but it won’t be true 5:1 if it’s not broadcasted that way.
