Microsoft Word 2007 is capable of working with documents in three file formats. The native format uses the file extension .docx. Files saved in this format can use the full range of features found in Word 2007, with the exception of macros. Any Word 2007 document which contains macros must be saved in a separate file format using the file .docm.br /

In addition to these two native formats, Word 2007 is also capable of both opening and creating documents using the .doc file extension, the file extension found in previous versions of Word. Word 2007 files saved with this file extension will not have access to the full range of features found with in Word 2007. Features which have been introduced in 2007, such as Themes, will not be available in documents saved with the file extension .doc.br /

When a new Word 2007 document is saved for the first-time these three options are available in a drop-down menu labelled Save As Type. Unless you specify otherwise, new documents will be saved with the file extension .docx. However, if youre sending the document to a person using an older version of Word, you can save the document in a backward compatible format, using the file extension .doc.br /

When you open a file created in a previous version of Microsoft Word, Word 2007 does not automatically convert this file to the new format. For convenience, it leaves it in the old format and goes into a special working mode called Compatibility Mode. (It displays the words Compatibility Mode in brackets next to the document.)br /

While the file is in compatibility mode, you can still continue working on it. You can make changes to the document and you can save those changes. The file will remain in the old format and remain in compatibility mode. However, certain features, such as Themes, will not be available when working in compatibility mode. If you position the mouse over the Themes area of the Page Layout Tab, a tool tip appears saying This document has been opened in compatibility mode. To use this feature convert your document to a new file format. Click on the Office button and then click convert. If you follow this advice Compatibility Mode disappears from the title bar and when we save the file Word changes the file extension and the document will then have been fully converted to the Word 2007 format.br /

If you find yourself in an environment where both Word 2007 and older versions are in use, Microsoft has provided another solution. It is possible to install an update called the Office Compatibility Pack. This makes it possible for older versions of all the Microsoft Office packages to open the new file formats.br /

One of the simplest is to use the Insert Worksheet button. This is located on the right-hand side of the worksheet tabs. Regardless of which worksheet is active, clicking this button will always insert a worksheet as the last tab in your workbook.br /

It is also possible to insert a worksheet at a given position within the workbook. For example, lets say we have a workbook containing a record of the invoices issued by a company in each month of the year. There are twelve worksheets names January, February, and so forth. We now want to insert quarterly analysis sheets at the end of each quarter.br /

As with columns, Excel inserts new worksheets to the left of the currently selected tab. Therefore to insert the first quarterly analysis sheet, we would select April. However, as weve seen, we cant use the Insert Worksheet button to insert the new sheet or it will always go at the end. So instead, we use the Insert command in the Cells section of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon.br /

We could also right-click on the April tab and choose Insert. Excel then allows us to choose the type of sheet we want to insert. As well as worksheet, we can insert a chart sheet, a backwardly compatible macro sheet or dialog sheet. These are useful for Excel developers. In addition we can insert a spreadsheet solution such as the billing statement or sales report. To insert a worksheet, in the General tab of the Insert dialogue, click on worksheet then click OK.br /

We would then rename the sheet; lets say Qtr1 Analysis and repeat the same procedure to insert analysis sheets to the left of the July and October tabs. The analysis sheet of the fourth quarter will be the last sheet in the workbook. We can only insert a worksheet in this position by using the Insert Worksheet button.br /

You can delete the selected worksheet by using the Delete Sheets command in the Cells group of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon. Its also possible to delete a sheet by right-clicking on the sheet tab and choosing Delete. To delete multiple sheets, simply highlight the relevant tabs and then using the Delete Sheet command. br /

Selecting multiple sheets involves the use of the classic Windows techniques of Shift-click and Control-click. To select a contiguous range of sheet tabs, click on the first, hold down the Shift key and click on the last. To select a non-contiguous range of tabs, click on the first, hold down the Control key and click on each of the others.br /

To deselect a selected range of tabs, click on a tab which isnt selected. If all tabs are selected, just click on the name of any tab to select only that tab.br /
